A Thriving Partnership
Cisco, a Microsoft Gold Partner, collaborates closely with Microsoft. A significant product of the partnership between Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) and Microsoft is Windows Server on WAAS. This product was jointly announced on February 26, 2008, and released on October 1, 2008.
The partnership continues with cooperation and investments, including:
- Cisco WAAS virtual blade technology validation in the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program, with support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2
- Protocol optimization, through Cisco WAAS participation in the Microsoft Protocol Optimization Licensing Program
- Numerous joint solutions such as for Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint and white papers
- Ongoing investments, such as engineering meetings, and Cisco WAAS participation in Microsoft Tech-Ed and TechReady events
The Joint Solution: Branch Office Optimization
Windows Server on WAAS can reduce the cost and complexity of providing IT services in branch locations. It combines accelerated access to centralized applications with highly secure, reliable, local Windows Server services. It also adds additional application servers supported by the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP).
The combination of the SVVP and Cisco WAAS virtual blade technology allows IT administrators to:
- Deploy Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 and additional applications and servers, including Microsoft, third-party, and proprietary solutions
- Profile applications and services on Cisco virtual blades with the same methods used with industry-standard servers
- Depend on the tight partnership of Cisco and Microsoft for support
The Microsoft-Cisco partnership predates the Microsoft Protocol Optimization Licensing Program. Therefore, the partnership offers validated optimization for Microsoft servers and applications, including:
- Microsoft Exchange and Outlook
- Internet Explorer
- Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS)
- Microsoft Print Server technology
