This document provides an overview of the components, functions and signaling protocols supported by the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch.

Objective

The owner/operator of a Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch can use this document to better understand how the system interfaces with the network, and how it provides network and subscriber features in conjunction with other network elements.

Note Some features involve the use of other network elements (NEs) deployed in the service provider network, for example, gateways, media servers, announcement servers, eMTAs, and SIP phones. See the Component Interoperability section of the Release Notes for a complete list of the specific peripheral platforms, functions, and software loads that have been used in system testing for interoperability with the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Release 4.5.x software. Earlier or later releases of platform software might be interoperable with the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch and it might be possible to use other functions on these platforms. The list in the Release Notes certifies only that the required interoperation of these platforms, the functions listed, and the protocols listed have been successfully tested with the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch.

This System Description contains the following chapters:

This document also includes the "Glossary" and "Index".

Site Preparation and Telephony Feature Descriptions

Beginning with Release 4.5.x, the former System Description document is divided into three separate documents:

•Preinstallation information has been moved to a new document, Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Site Preparation and Network Communications Requirements.

•The information on network and subscriber features (telephony features) has been moved to a new document, Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Network and Subscriber Feature Descriptions. It contains descriptions of network features, subscriber features, class of service (COS) functions, outgoing call barring (OCB), feature interactions, and interactive voice response (IVR) features.

•The System Description (this document) still contains the "Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Technical Overview" and "Supported Signaling Protocols", along with the "Glossary" and "Index".

A clarification was made regarding the usage of the IETF RFC standards in the "SIP and SIP-T References" section on page 2-15.

The total number of provisionable subscriber features was updated (increased to over 60) on page 1 of Chapter 1, "Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Technical Overview."

OL-7312-03, November 01, 2005 (First Complete Release of this Document for Release 4.5.x):

This document includes all of the information that was contained in the previous issue (the Release 4.4 System Description), and has been updated for Release 4.5.x as described in this preface.

System updates for Release 4.5.x include the following features:

•Command autocompletion and context-sensitive help

•Synchronous provisioning

•External log server, also called log archive file (LAF)

•BTS-PGW ISUP transparency

•ITU LNP

•Additional network and subscriber features (telephony features)

These updates are contained in the following chapters of this document:

•Chapter 1, "Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Technical Overview"

–Updated information on the database sizing option (set at time of software installation).

–Updated the list of capabilities and features.

–Updated the network configuration diagram (Figure 1-9) and the note applicable to static routes.

•Chapter 2, "Supported Signaling Protocols"

–Updated references to specific Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch protocol guides and the component interoperability information.

–Added ISUP transparency with the Cisco PGW 2200.

Note H.323 applications are supported in Release 4.5.1 but not in Release 4.5.0.
