Problem Description

Certain LSI 9265 and 9266 MegaRAID controllers shipped by Cisco between August 31, 2012 and September 12, 2012 do not power back up if power is restored immediately after power off of the server.

Background

Certain MegaRAID cards were manufactured with the use of an unqualified version of a voltage regulator component with different threshold values than the design specification. Units with the incorrect regulator do not power up properly if an attached CacheVault kit is in a semi-discharged state. The issue does not affect units without an attached CacheVault kit, and affected units are identifiable via serial number.

Problem Symptoms

Typical behavior of affected units is the MegaRAID controller is not recognized if powered on 15 to 120 seconds after power off. The exact time window for unreliable power on can vary, dependent upon on operating conditions. No symptom is observed if there is not an attached CacheVault kit.

Workaround/Solution

If the server must be powered down for some reason, keep the power turned off for three (3) minutes or more, and then restore the power. This allows the CacheVault to fully discharge before system power up.

For a long term solution, Cisco recommends replacement of the affected LSI 9266 MegaRAID controller. Affected units can be identified using the FN 63601 Serial Number Validation Tool. Replacement unit(s) can be ordered with the form below. Serial number(s) of the old unit(s) are required for the order to be processed.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

  1. Log in to Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) and choose the Storage Adapters tab to determine the serial number(s) of any installed LSI MegaRAID 9265 and 9266 controllers. The Product Name will be LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265CV-8i or LSI MegaRAID SAS 9266-81, and the serial number is displayed as in the examples below. The Cisco Product ID is printed on a label affixed to the board. Note the serial number and ensure the Product ID of the LSI RAID controller is UCS-RAID-9266CV or UCS-RAID-9265CV. If you do not have one of the noted Product IDs then your hardware is not affected.
