Problem Description
The power supply overheats under light load conditions.
Background
The firmware-driven power supply fan control algorithm does not run the fan at a high enough speed when it detects a very light load. The power supply firmware version with this issue is 00.01.04. In a worst case failure mode, the power supply might shut off due to overheat condition.
Problem Symptoms
One or more of these symptoms might be exhibited when the power supply operates under light load:
- The power supply heat alarm is generated.
- The power supply is hot to the touch.
- The power supply shuts down due to excessive heat.
Workaround/Solution
Replace the power supply with the new version. Systems with redundant power supplies allow hot swapping of one power supply at a time without shutting down the server.
These variations of Cisco Product ID R2X0-PSU2-650W-SB or R2X0-PSU2-650W-SB= have updated firmware to fix the issue:
- Part number 74-7541-01 labeled with deviation# D119208
- Part number 74-7541-02
Contact Cisco Technical Support if you require hardware replacement due to this issue.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
Method 1 - Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) GUI Interface
Click the Power Supplies tab on CIMC and check the Product ID and firmware version. The affected Product ID is R2X0-PSU2-650W-SB, and the affected firmware version is 00.01.04. The updated/fixed firmware version is 00.01.05. This example displays two power supplies with fixed firmware:

Method 2 - CLI
Enter these CLI commands through the management interface:
server1# scope chassis
server1 /chassis # show psu detail
Name PSU1:
In. Power (Watts): 8
Out. Power (Watts): 650
Firmware : 00.01.04
Status : Present
Product ID : R2X0-PSU2-650W-SBThis example shows affected firmware level 00.01.04. The fixed firmware level is 00.01.05.
Method 3 - External Label Identification
Affected power supplies are externally labeled with part number 74-7541-01 and no additional deviation label.
Power supplies with the firmware fix are labeled with either of the following:
- Part number 74-7541-02
- Part number 74-7541-01 plus a label with deviation# D119208
This example shows a power supply with a deviation label:
Deviation
Power supplies externally labeled with Deviation# D119208 have the firmware fix applied.
