Problem Description
OC768 cards operating on the CRS-1 chassis may encounter intermittent burst BER events several months after installation due to dendrite growth. A dendrite is a crystal with a tree-like branching structure that is formed when a metal, or an alloy of multiple metals, in liquid form freezes. Packaging contamination can allow molding compounds to absorb moisture through the package body and between the lead frame molding compound interface causing dendrite formation. Combined with moisture, this results in a lowering of resistance between tracks and pads and can lead to metal corrosion.
Background
Contamination resulting from the assembly process or materials used in the packaging of the OC768 Mux and Demux chips may result in corrosion and dendrite growth occurring on some in-package capacitors. The corrosion products and/or growth of these dendrites will eventually cause long-term reliability issues for the device. Failure is gradual and very dependant on the environment with time and temperature as accelerators.
Problem Symptoms
The end-user may initially experience intermittent BER bursts. This will be followed by more frequent BER bursts. Further deterioration will result in a transmit out of alignment (TXOOA) error flag which can be manually cleared. Eventually the interface reaches a state of "frame lock asserted" and is unable to transmit traffic from the interface.
Workaround/Solution
Cisco recommends replacing the affected hardware (1OC768-POS-SR). Although a replacement program was available in the past, it is now closed. Follow the Cisco RMA process to request a replacement and indicate AFN and FN63046.
As of approximately February 22, 2008 new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order E092422 and Deviation Number D094933 are free of this problem. Please refer to the How to Identify Hardware Levels section below for instructions on how to view the version and deviation of in-service product.
Note: Proactive Replacements fulfilled through the recall process typically take 2-3 weeks. Normal service level agreements do not apply to replacement requests related to this Field notice. Products that fall within the sited serial number range are NOT affected by this problem if they have ECO E092422 and Deviation D094933 applied.
How To Identify Hardware Levels
- Check the 1OC768-POS-SR by using the
show diag
command below. If the TAN is higher than 800-16968-04, the 1OC768-POS-SR has been upgraded and does not need replacing. No further checks are necessary.- Check the Deviation Number by using the
show diag
command below. If the Deviation number is D094933, the 1OC768-POS-SR has already been reworked and does not need replacing, and no further checks are necessary. If the deviation is N/A as in the output below, proceed to step three.- If the TAN is 800-16968-04 or lower, check all suspect boards using the SN Validation tool. If a serial number is found in the list as Affected, replace the 1OC768-POS-SR using the Cisco RMA process and refer to this FN.
