Problem Description

New U.S. Daylight Savings Times rules go into effect in March 2007. Consequently, customers whose network components rely on the default U.S. summertime clock settings within Cisco IOS will be affected by the following problem.

For operating systems that have not been updated with the new U.S. DST policy changes, timestamps will exhibit a one hour time clock offset lasting three weeks beginning at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March of 2007. They will also exhibit a one hour time clock offset lasting one week beginning at 2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November.

Any time-dependent applications not running the upgraded version of software will be affected by this problem.

To comply with the DST change, operating system vendors such as Sun Microsystems and Windows Microsoft released patches for updating their respective OS. Sun Microsystems has released a patch for JRE and JPI.

The Cisco DST patch for CS-Manager will update the JRE and JPI that were shipped with Common Services and Cisco Security Manager. This patch will not install patches to the operating System or any system Java runtime environments.

A patch for CS-Manager client systems is packaged within the CS-Manager patch. Instructions for applying the client patch are also included.

Background

On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed into law the Energy Policy Act, which extends DST by four weeks from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November. The Secretary of Energy will report the impact of this change to Congress, and then Congress retains the right to resume the 2005 DST schedule once the Department of Energy study is complete. This law takes effect on March 1, 2007.

Problem Symptoms

Systems without the DST patch will be incorrect by one hour. This will affect scheduled tasks, and time of day reporting or display.

Workaround/Solution

Customers running CS-Manager version 3.0.1 may immediately apply the patch (CSM_3_0_1_DST_Patch.tar) from the Cisco Security Manager Software Download (registered customers only) page.

Installation instructions are provided at the patch location for the CS-Manager patch and for the Client patch.

Prior to applying the patch, customers running a CS-Manager release prior to version 3.0.1 must first upgrade to 3.0.1.
