Problem Description
When a Service Control Engine (SCE) Collection Manager (CM) server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4) Update 3 boots, neither Sybase (in the bundled configuration) nor CM start during the boot sequence.
Background
During the CM installation, boot scripts are configured on the server to start the CM and Sybase (in the bundled case) for the sake of the high availability. When CM is installed on RHEL 4 Update 3, these boot scripts hang without completing the operation.
Problem Symptoms
When entering the command ps -ef , the utility's output contains one of the following hung processes:
initlog -q -c /etc/rc5.d/S90sybase start
initlog -q -c /etc/rc5.d/S91scmscm start
Workaround/Solution
Workaround:
To start Sybase manually, run as user root:
~scmscm/setup/sybase start
To start CM manually, run as user scmscm:
~scmscm/cm/bin/cm start
Solution:
SCMS CM should not be used with RHEL 4 Update 3. The system should be updated to RHEL 4 Update 4. Use the Redhat documentation as reference on how to update with the minimal downtime.
