Problem Description
Cisco has determined that the PVDM2-8 can cause an unexpected reload of the host router when used in Flex Complexity mode with any other PVDM2 module in a NM-HDV2 module or on a PVDM slot on the motherboard of a Cisco 2800 or Cisco 3800 Series routers.
This failure does not occur when:
-
If any combination of PVDM2-16, PVDM2-32, PVDM2-48 and/or PVDM2-64 modules are used.
-
The host router is only configured with one PVDM2-8 module.
-
When High or Medium codec complexity is selected for Voice-over-IP calls and the feature Hairpinning ( DSP local-bypass) is enabled.
Note:?Hairpinning is enabled by default
Background
This defect is caused by an incorrect handling of PVDM2-8's initialization in Flex Complexity mode in the IOS code.
Problem Symptoms
Cisco has determined that the PVDM2-8 can cause an unexpected reload of the host router when used in Flex Complexity mode with any other PVDM2 module in a NM-HDV2 module or on a PVDM slot on the motherboard of a Cisco 2800 or Cisco 3800 Series routers.
Workaround/Solution
To alleviate this problem and protect the network from an occurrence prior to the availability of the Cisco IOS releases that include the fix to this issue, customers are recommended to use either of the following workarounds:
For the Cisco 2801 router:
The likelihood of experiencing this issue may be dramatically decreased by using a PVDM2-8 module only in PVDM slot 1, with or without any other PVDM2 modules (PVDM2-16, PVDM2-32, PVDM2-48, PVDM2-64) present.
For Cisco 2800, 3800 series and Cisco HDV2 Network Modules:
The exposure to a potential failure may be eliminated by configuring the codec complexity to Medium instead of Flex for Voice-over-IP calls. For example: Router(config-voicecard)# codec complexity medium and to not disable the feature hairpinning which is enabled by default. For example Router(config-voicecard)# local-bypass(default) for POTs-to-POTs calls.
