Environment
Novell servers with Proteon and Madge cards in a Token Ring environment.
Problem
Workstations get disconnected from the Novell server when the Cisco router is configured for Novell Routing and multiring is enabled.
Symptom
User's session drops when the rif cache in the router is flushed. The server has a non-IBM Token Ring card such as Madge or Proteon. When the rif is flushed, we send a XID explorer frame to the server with a null sap as the dest (00). The server does not respond, and we drop the routed session.
Cause
Non-IBM cards do not always load a 802.2 layer. IBM has 802.2 in ucode on its cards.
Resolution
Contact Novell and request the file "ATOK311.EXE." This file is a module that gives the Token Ring server the 802.2 layer.
