New Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(13)AY for
Catalyst 2940 Series Switches

Overview

Cisco^® is pleased to announce Cisco IOS^® Software for the Catalyst^® 2940 Series Ethernet switches. The Catalyst 2940 Series extends Cisco's leadership in providing secure, reliable, and easily managed LAN switching solutions to wiring-constrained end-user environments. In other words, the Cisco Catalyst 2940 should be used when it is not feasible or too expensive to pull additional copper or fiber cabling from the wiring closet to satisfy an increased number of end-user devices.

This Product Bulletin describes the content and delivery information concerning Cisco IOS Software release 12.1(13)AY, which is the first IOS release that provides support for the Catalyst 2940 Series Ethernet Switches. 12.1(13)AY is an Early Deployment (ED) release, based off of IOS 12.1(13)EA1. The 12.1(13)AY software release should not be used for any other switch other than the Catalyst 2940 Series Switches.

This release also supports Cisco's embedded, Web-based, network management software, Cluster Management Suite (CMS).

Features in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(13)AY

This release contains all features found in the Catalyst 2950 Standard Image feature set of IOS 12.1(13)EA1 with the following exceptions:

•Only 4 VLANs are supported

•Only 4 STP instances are supported

•Cisco Express Setup is added

Software Image Migration Guide

Figure 1 below displays Cisco IOS 12.1(13)AY release functionality relative to the 12.1E release train. This diagram also identifies the recommended migration path to IOS 12.1(19)EA1. Please note that 12.1(13)AY is a special one-time "X" release with no planned maintenance releases. Thus, bugs that would have otherwise been fixed in a maintenance release will be fixed in the 12.1EA train and will be available in the 12.1(19)EA1 release.
