Cisco IOS Software
General Deployment
Release 12.0
Cisco IOS® Software is the foundation networking software that allows customers to deliver Cisco IP network services on a flexible infrastructure that is scalable, reliable, and secure. It provides industry-leading, standards-based technologies proven in use across the broadest and largest networks in operation today.
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 has been certified as a general deployment (GD) release. GD certification is awarded to Cisco IOS Software that provides proven technology that has had extensive field exposure in a wide range of network environments. It has also passed rigorous metrics analyzing stability and bug trends, as well as customer-satisfaction surveys. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 includes feature enhancements such as quality of service (QoS), IP and routing, connectivity and scalability, switching, security, voice, reliability, and management, as well as significant improvements in quality as a result of continuous dedicated testing.
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 Applications
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 has added over 38 new enterprise and service-provider features compared to the last major release. It has been designed to enhance the capabilities of enterprise customers in five major application areas: customer care, workforce optimization, supply-chain management, e-learning, and Web foundation (workflow, publishing, data access, and community). Security, settlement services, and billing applications are just a sample of the many service-provider-oriented features introduced in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0.
By providing a variety of security, switching, QoS, and routing features, Release 12.0 addresses the needs of both the service provider and the enterprise customer. Because the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set detects and protects against denial-of-service intrusions, enterprises can guarantee their e-commerce customers a reliable, secure environment. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 also provides a vast array of QoS capabilities such as committed access rate, Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP4) precedence propagation, and IP Precedence marking, enabling Internet service providers (ISPs) to provide inter-ISP service-level agreements (SLAs) and enterprise virtual private networks (VPNs) with differentiated services. Table 1 lists features and benefits of the new release.
