Introduction

This document describes supplemental information in regards to mailstores on Cisco Unity Connection (UC) and references current documentation when possible.

Minutes of Messages for Each Server

You might desire to know the amount of messages that your UC server can hold. Many customers decide to migrate to virtual platforms. For more information about the approximate message storage for G-711 codecs (in minutes), reference the Specifications for Virtual Platform Overlays for Currently Shipping Connection 9.x Servers section of the Cisco Unity Connection 9.x Supported Platforms List Cisco article.

If you run a Media Convergence Server (MCS) and would like similar information, reference the Currently Shipping Platform Overlay <x> Servers or Previously Shipped Platform Overlay <x> Servers sections of the Cisco Unity Connection 9.x Supported Platforms List Cisco article, and locate your specific hardware.

Note: The documents described in this section include table data that is labeled Approximate message storage, G-711 codec, minutes, which lists the approximate message storage in minutes.

Addition of Mailstores in UC

You can have up to five mailstores in UC; there is one by default, and you can add up to four more. Additional mailstores are created in order to optimize performance.

Note: It is important to understand that you do not create more space for messages when you add more mailstores, only optimize the performance of a server that has a large number of mailboxes.

Cisco recommends that you have no more than 5,000 users in a mailstore. This recommendation is documented in the Creating a Mailbox Store in Cisco Unity Connection 9.x section of the Managing Mailbox Stores in Cisco Unity Connection 9.x Cisco article. The article also describes how to create an additional mailstore.

Another mailbox-store database for information on voice messages that are saved in that mailbox store. The database is presized for an average of approximately 40 messages each for 10,000 users, or about 1.25 GB. (The database application currently being used for Connection cannot dynamically resize a database after it is created.)

The 1.25 GB mentioned in the excerpt is used for table rows in order to store maps to the user messages that are stored elsewhere on UC; it does not refer to the size of the database that is used in order to store user messages.
