Memory Upgrade for NRS Series Sensors
Overview
Memory upgrades are now available for customers with Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System (IDS) NRS series Sensors. The additional memory provided in the upgrade kit will significantly increase the efficiency of the IP fragmentation reassembly functionality provided in the 2.2.1.5 (and subsequent) signature update. Details of the memory upgrade and ordering information are provided in this product bulletin.Upgrade Details
The NRS series Sensor appliances were shipped with either 64MB or 128MB depending upon the model. This was sufficient for the intrusion detection functionality that was shipping at the time these sensors were manufactured. The additional packet buffering that was added in the 2.2.1.2 update to improve performance and the IP fragmentation reassembly feature that was added in the 2.2.1.5 update require more memory for optimal performance. The IDS series that Cisco began shipping in late-February 2000 includes the additional required memory and there is no need to upgrade the memory on IDS series sensors. The Sensor model is listed on a label on the back of the unit. If you cannot physically access the Sensor or if the label has been accidentally removed, you can determine the amount of memory by logging into the Sensor (as either user netrangr or root) and running the dmesg command. A sample output from the dmesg command is provided below:
netrangr@sensor:/usr/nr>dmesg | moreMay 16 09:35SunOS Release 5.6 Version Generic_105182-15 [UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0]Copyright (c) 1983-1997, Sun Microsystems, Inc.mem = 130684K (0x7f9f000)avail mem = 118689792[Rest of output deleted]The line below the copyright statement in the dmesg output beginning with "mem =" lists the amount of memory installed on the sensor. The mapping of the amount of installed memory to the models is provided in Table 1.
