Product Bulletin #560

Catalyst 1600 End of Life

With the introduction of the Catalyst 1800 Token Ring switch, Cisco Systems has decided to discontinue the Catalyst 1600. This bulletin provides detail on the Catalyst 1600's end of life.

The Catalyst 1600 has been OEM'ed from Madge Networks. Continued development of the Catalyst 1600 has become unfeasible from a business perspective due to Madge's delayed delivery of feature enhancements such as the Catalyst 1600 FDDI module and unattractive pricing for future enhancements.

End of Catalyst 1600 Orderability and Production

With the addition of the Catalyst 1800 to the Cisco product line, product ordering for the Catalyst 1600 (product numbers WS-C1600 and WS-C164R) has been turned off effective immediately. Customers should be directed to the Catalyst 1800 instead. The Catalyst 1800 provides the following advantages:

Increased functionality (bridging modes, filters)

Integrated network management with Remote Monitoring (RMON) at no additional cost, versus $1495 for RMON support in the Catalyst 1600

Increased connectivity with up to 16 Token Ring ports or 12 Token Ring ports with an FDDI uplink, versus up to 12 Token Ring ports or 8 Token Ring ports with an FDDI uplink in the Catalyst 1600

Investment protection

Cisco is also offering a Catalyst 1600 to Catalyst 1800 trade-up program. For more information on the trade-up program, see Product Bulletin #522 or #522EU for EMEA). The Catalyst 1800 is considered Cisco's strategic offering for Token Ring LAN backbone switching, and every effort should be made to convert existing customers to this product.
