End of Sales/End of Life Announcement for the Cisco MGX 8220 Edge Concentrator
(also known as the StrataCom AXIS Shelf product)
Cisco Systems, Inc. is officially announcing the End of Sales/End of Life of the Cisco MGX® 8220 Edge Concentrator product effective March 1, 2002. Cisco customers may continue to receive software and hardware support for a longer period (as set forth below).
Cisco has decided to discontinue the Cisco MGX 8220 and replace it with next-generation platforms that provide higher capabilities, new features and future development. To protect customers' initial investments, some service modules and related components in the Cisco MGX 8220 are supported in the Cisco 8230 and Cisco MGX 8250 Edge Concentrators as indicated in Table 2.

Discontinue Contract Renewal Date
The date that renewing/extending a service contract for this system will discontinue.
End of Support and Product Obsolescence Date
The date that Cisco Logistics (in conjunction with Manufacturing) will cease honoring its commitment to process Return Material Authorization (RMA) orders for components with this system configuration; it is also the date that the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) will cease honoring its commitment to assist customers with any issues related to components with this system configuration.

Cisco MGX 8220 Service Module, ASC/BNM Cards, and MGX 8220 Bootcode Image Replacement Information
Table 2 indicates which Cisco MGX 8220 service modules are supported and not supported in the Cisco MGX 8230 and MGX 8250. For the purposes of this table, the Cisco MGX 8250 is considered equivalent to the Cisco MGX 8850 equipped with a PXM-1 type controller card.
Note 1: In Table 2, the Cisco MGX 8220 service modules supported in the Cisco MGX 8230 and MGX 8250 (marked with a "Y") may be physically moved from the Cisco MGX 8220 system to a Cisco MGX 8230 or MGX 8250. Before removing the service modules from the Cisco MGX 8220, the customer should upgrade the bootcode image to the versions listed in Table 3.
Please note that service modules that are marked with a "Y" are not going through the end of sales/end of life process, but are included in the matrix for completeness.
Note 2: In Table 4, the combined ASC and BNM cards supported in the Cisco MGX 8220 can be replaced with the cards in Cisco MGX 8230 and MGX 8250. To identify proper card replacements, refer to the replacement options listed in Table 4.

Q. Why has Cisco decided to End of Sales/End of Life (EOS/EOL) the Cisco MGX® 8220 Edge Concentrator?
A. Cisco has decided to discontinue the Cisco MGX 8220 to replace it with newer products that provide higher capacities, new features, and future development. Two such products are the Cisco MGX 8230 and Cisco MGX 8250 Edge Concentrators.
Q. Is the StrataCom AXIS Shelf product the same as the Cisco MGX 8220 Edge Concentrator?
A. Yes, the StrataCom AXIS Shelf product is the same as the Cisco MGX 8220 Edge Concentrator. The name change is the result of re-branding that occurred after Cisco's acquisition of StrataCom in 1996.
Q. Is there a replacement product for the Cisco MGX 8220?
A. No, however, the Cisco MGX 8230 or 8250 Edge Concentrator products provide most of the functionality in the Cisco MGX 8220 while at the same time providing voice, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and other capabilities such as higher speed and capacity. In order to protect customers' intial investments, some service modules and related components in the Cisco MGX 8220 are supported in the Cisco MGX 8230 and MGX 8250 Edge Concentrators. Q. How long will Cisco accept and ship new orders for the Cisco MGX 8220 products?
A. Cisco will continue to accept orders for the Cisco MGX 8220 only from existing customers until the EOS date of September 2, 2002. Cisco will complete fulfillment and shipment of new equipment orders until the end of production date of October 2, 2002.
Q. How long will customers be provided software support and hardware support of the product?
A. Cisco will maintain a support staff and Technical Assistance Center (TAC) assistance to maintain existing systems until the following dates:

Q. Where can customers get more information on the Cisco MGX 8220 EOL and product information on the Cisco MGX 8230 and MGX 8250 Edge Concentrators?
Q. How long will Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) support on the field replaceable unit (FRU) components be available for customers' system configurations?
A. RMA support will be available for customers' system configurations until March 1, 2007.
Q. If a customer's service support contract has expired, can the customer still take full advantage of the milestone dates documented in this bulletin without a service contract?
A. No, a service contract must be active in order to receive any support services, including advance replacements of Cisco MGX 8220 service modules and TAC assistance.
Q. Is there any chassis compatibility of Cisco MGX 8220 core cards with other edge concentrators?
