From: Dan Ove Skaalerud, Cisco 4000 Series Product Manager
Subject: Cisco 4500-M Announcement, Cisco 4500 End of Sale
Date: May 16 1995
Introduction
To increase memory configuration flexibility, and reduce customer cost for running Cisco IOS SW subsets that require more than the default 8MB Main memory on the Cisco 4500 system, we are today introducing the Cisco 4500-M.
Currently the default Main memory on the Cisco 4500 is 8 MB and the only available option is 32 MB. Likewise the default Shared memory is 4 MB while the only Shared memory option is 16 MB.
The new Cisco 4500-M supports both a new 16 MB Main memory option and a new 8 MB Shared memory option. The default configuration is still 8 MB Main memory, 4 MB Shared memory and 4 MB Flash memory.
The Cisco 4500-M and the new memory options for it may reduce the price for the extra memory needed for running certain Cisco IOS SW subset images by 50% or more.
Additionally we are introducing 2 new Flash memory options for customers that want to store several Cisco IOS images in the routers.
Other than these memory changes the base 4500 system remains the same.
New Products
The new products announced today are:
•
CISCO4500-M: 4500-M Modular Multiprotocol Router, AC Power
•
CISCO4500-M-DC: 4500-M Modular Multiprotocol Router, DC Power
•
MEM-NP16M-R4-P: 16 MB Upgrade, Replaces 8 MB Main Memory
•
MEM-NP8S-R4-P: 8 MB Upgrade, Replaces 4 MB Shared Memory
•
MEM-NP8F-R4-P: 8 MB Upgrade, Replaces 4 MB Flash Memory
•
MEM-NP16F-R4-P: 16 MB Upgrade, Replaces 4 MB Flash Memory
All products with R4 in the ordering code are only supported on the Cisco 4500-M. The Cisco 4500 does not support any of the above memory options.
For customers who wants more than the default 4 MB Flash the MEM-NP8F-R4-P should be used. This is one 8 MB SIMM that will leave a second slot available for future expansion. For customers that want to upgrade a 4500 from the default existing 4 MB to 8 MB Flash, the MEM-NP8F-P should be used. This is one additional 4 MB SIMM that goes into the second Flash socket.
Existing and Continued Memory Products
Cisco 4500 memory products that will continue to be available for existing, installed 4500s or for the 4500-M are the following:
•
MEM-NP8F-P: Additional 4 MB of Flash Memory
•
MEM-NP32M-P: 32 MB Upgrade, Replaces 8 MB Main Memory
•
MEM-NP16S-P: 16 MB Upgrade, Replaces 4 MB Shared Memory
The 32 MB Main DRAM and the 16 MB Shared options are supported in both the existing Cisco 4500 as well as the Cisco 4500-M while for 8 MB Flash for the Cisco 4500-M, we recommend the new R4 product.
Minimum Memory Configurations
The following tables show the minimum memory configurations for the Cisco 4500 and 4500-M for Cisco IOS software releases 10.2 and 10.3.
Availability
The Cisco 4500-M is orderable May 17 and will ship on June 5 1995. Our inventory of the Cisco 4500 is limited. And to make the transition as easy as possible for our customers all orders received for the Cisco 4500 on or after May 17 will be entered automatically as 4500-Ms.
The 4500-M supports Cisco IOS releases 10.2(6) and 10.3(3).
As the Cisco 4500-M is a configuration superset of the current Cisco 4500 there is no reason to continue to carry the Cisco 4500 so it will end of life as of June 8 1995.
