Product Bulletin #446

Cisco 1002 End of Sale

Introduction

This product bulletin covers the issues associated with the end of sale of the Cisco 1002 LANþExtender product. The last order date for the Cisco 1002 is June 15, 1996.

Note: The Cisco 1001 LAN Extender is not being discontinued at this time.

The Cisco 1001 and Cisco 1002 LAN Extender products first shipped in September, 1994. Since the release of the Cisco 1005 router in September 1994, demand for the Ciscoþ1002 has declined sufficiently that it no longer makes sense to offer the product.

This document includes information about which products are affected, availability and maintenance, as well as substitute products.

Product Substitution

The Cisco 1001, which Cisco will continue to offer, is an appropriate substitute for customers who require LAN Extension functionality and can obtain Customer Premises Equipment with a V.35 physical interface (Winchester connector); the Cisco 1002 supports an X.21 interface (DB-15 connector).

The Cisco 1005 router also is an appropriate substitute product for the Cisco 1002. While the Cisco 1005 does not support LAN Extender functionality, the 1005 does support IP routing plus bridging—as well as significant ease-of-use functionality—in it's entry-level, IP software image; higher-functionality images also support IPX and/or AppleTalk routing. Like the Cisco 1002, the Cisco 1005 provides Ethernet-to-leased line connectivity; in addition, the 1005 supports X.25, Frame Relay, SMDS, and DDR (Switched-56). The Cisco 1005's serial port has a "5-in-1" DB-60 connector; separate cables are available to support X.21, V.35, EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-449, and EIA-530 physical interfaces.
