Cisco 600 Series DSL Customer Premises Equipment Routers

Introduction

This document contains procedures for establishing connectivity between your PC and Cisco 600 series Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), and for entering and exiting ROM Monitor (RMON) mode on the CPE.

The information presented in this document was created from devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If you are working in a live network, ensure that you understand the potential impact of any command before using it.

Connect Your PC and Cisco CPE

Step-by-Step Instructions

The following procedure is written with the assumption that you are using a terminal access program; for example, HyperTerminal in a Windows environment.

1. Set up console access.

   If you do not have a management cable, you can make one. Refer to Making a Management Cable for the Cisco 600 Series CPE.

2. Using the serial cable supplied with the modem, connect a COM port on your PC to the management port on the modem.

3. Configure your terminal access program with the following settings:

   • COM port = port into which you plugged the cable

   • Baud rate: 38400 bps – recommended (standard 9600 bps possible)

   • Data bits: 8

   • Parity: None

   • Stop bits: 1

   • Flow control: None

4. Press ENTER until you see the prompt; for example, cbos>, modem1> or usa> .

   When you see the prompt, the PC and Cisco CPE are communicating.

Enter RMON Mode on a Cisco 600 Series CPE

There are two methods for entering RMON mode.

Enter RMON Mode From ENABLE Mode

Follow these steps to enter RMON mode from ENABLE mode.

1. Enter ENABLE mode and type reboot.

   cbos>enable
   cbos#reboot
   

2. Immediately press and hold down the CTRL-C keys on the keyboard until you see the following:

   Hello!
    
   Ron960 User Interface: Build  111 (Feb 13 2000 17:17:45)
   NetSpeed HomeRunner(TM); i960 JX; JA step number 03
   Copyright 1997 NetSpeed Corporation
   Copyright 1998, 1999 Cisco Systems
   =>

   When you see the => prompt, you are in RMON mode and can release the CTRL-C keys.

Enter RMON Mode After Powering the CPE

Follow these steps to enter RMON after powering the CPE.

1. Turn off the Cisco CPE, then turn it on again by disconnecting and reconnecting the AC power plug on the back of the CPE.

2. Immediately after reconnecting the power plug, press and hold down the CTRL-C keys on the keyboard until you see the following:

   Hello!

   When you see the => prompt, you are in RMON mode and can release the CTRL-C keys.

Exit RMON Mode on a Cisco 600 Series CPE

To exit RMON, type rb at the RMON prompt; for example, =>rb. Typing this command will reboot the Cisco 600 and put it back into normal operating mode. You should see the following:

Hello!
Expanding CBOS image...
CBOS v2.3.0.053 - Release Software

If the CPE does not return to normal operating mode, turn it off then turn it on again. If it is still in RMON mode, the software image file may be corrupted. Refer to Installing Software on the Cisco 600 Series Via Serial Download for information about how to perform a serial software image download.
