Find a Valid Image in Flash
The first thing you need to do is issue the dir flash: command for each available device, and look for a valid Cisco IOSĀ® Software image.
rommon 3 > dir flash: File size Checksum File name 3307884 bytes (0x804b4c) 0x6ba0 c1700-ny-mz.121-6.bin rommon 4 >
Try to boot from that image. If the image is valid, this brings you back to normal operation mode:
rommon 5 > boot flash:c1700-ny-mz.121-6.bin program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x804a30 Self decompressing the image : ################################### ########...
If none of the files are valid, you have to download a new IOS with one of the procedures explained in the next two sections.
Note: If you do not have a backup of the Cisco IOS image for your Cisco 1700 series router, you have to download the Cisco IOS image from the Software Advisor (registered customers only) or the Download Software area tool to your PC or workstation running the TFTP Server application.
Download Using TFTP from ROMmon
The quickest way to re-install a new Cisco IOS Software image on the router is to go to the "TFTP Download Command Variables" section of the ROM Monitor documentation.
Download Using X-modem from ROMmon
You can also download a new Cisco IOS Software image through the console port using Xmodem. To do so, go to Xmodem Console Download Procedure Using ROMmon.
