Q & A
Q. What are the feature differences between the end-of-life Gigabit Ethernet card and the replacement Gigabit Ethernet card?
A. The replacement card supports the MDI mode of operation on the Fast Ethernet ports. Other than that, there are no other feature differences between the two products.
Q. What do MDI and MDI-X modes mean?
A. MDI stands for media-dependent interface. The two modes of operation are used for flexible cable management by allowing configuration of the port in MDI or media-dependent interface crossed-over (MDI-X) mode. See more information about this flexible configuration in the product documentation at:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120limit/120s/120s24/10720.htm - 1323015
Q. Does the customer need to upgrade the Cisco IOS Software image to support the replacement card?
A. Yes; customers need to upgrade to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(25)S IOS; the replacement card is not supported in the 12.0(21)SP software image.
Q. Are there any performance differences between the two cards?
A. No.
Q. Are there any physical differences between the two products?
A. The PHY used for the Fast Ethernet ports are different; these were changed in order to pass some compliance requirements: conducted immunity in MDI mode, radiated immunity 10V per meter, and Taiwan approvals with unshielded cable.
Q. What about the price of the new Gigabit Ethernet card?
A. It is priced the same as the existing Gigabit Ethernet card.
