End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module and Associated Software
Cisco Systems® announces the end of life of the Cisco® Catalyst® 4000 Layer 3 Services Module. The last day to order the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module is December 9, 2003. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until December 7, 2008. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module.
Customers are encouraged to migrate to the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV, which provides nonblocking Layer 2-4 switching at 64 Gbps and 48 Mpps. The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV also supports existing protocols such as Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) and AppleTalk in software with performance ranging from 80 Kpps to 90 Kpps in Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.1(13)EW. To address the loss of ports from migrating from a Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module to a WS-X4515, customers are encouraged to migrate to any desired Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet card offered within the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series.

Product Migration Options
The recommended replacement for the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module is the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV. In cases where the Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module is deployed in conjunction with the Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II in a Catalyst 4006, 4503, or 4506 chassis, a supervisor swap-out is necessary. However, if the Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module is deployed in conjunction with a Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine I in a Catalyst 4003 chassis, a supervisor engine, chassis, and power supply upgrade to the Catalyst 4503 chassis will be necessary (the Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV cannot be deployed in a Catalyst 4003 chassis). The Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV is compatible with all the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series chassis, the widely deployed Catalyst 4006 chassis, and existing Catalyst 4000 Series line cards for maximum deployment flexibility.
Table 3 provides information for migrating from the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module to the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV.
