General Statement of Direction for Legacy Interface Processors
Product Bulletin - No. 867
End-of-Sales: CX-AIP-SS and CX-AIP-E3
Introduction
Cisco Systems is announcing the end-of-sale (EOS) for two ATM Interface Processors (AIPs): AIP supporting single-mode SONET [CX-AIP-SS (=)] and AIP for E3 [CX-AIP-E3 (=)]. Due to severe component shortages, the standard period of orderability after this EOS announcement can not be offered. CX-AIP-SS has entered EOS status effective December 17, 1998. CX-AIP-E3 remains orderable until the end of this fiscal quarter (January 1999). In summary, last orderable dates for these two products are:
General Statement of Direction for Legacy Interface Processors
The original interface processor family of products (AIP, EIP, FEIP, FSIP, FIP, HIP, MIP, TRIP, SMIP, SSIP) has been available for approximately six years. Due to the age of these legacy interface processors, component availability is becoming scarce. Recently, it became necessary to reduce the variety of models within each media family of interface processors in order to provide our customers with a continued supply of these legacy interfaces within each media type. (See Product Bulletin 760 for details athttp://www.cisco.com/warp/public/733/ip/760_pp.htm).
Note:
this does not affect the Versatile Interface Processor (VIP) family or those interface processors based on VIP technology (CT3IP, POSIP, FEIP2, and more).
It is anticipated but not guaranteed that component supply will be exhausted for all remaining legacy interface processors in January 2000. Please note that component supply may be exhausted before this time.Support Programs
EOS refers to the time when certain products are no longer available for new purchases. It does not apply to the service and support programs for those products. Cisco will continue to support the AIP after EOS through our SMARTnet™ and Comprehensive Maintenance programs. Customers with either of these service contracts are entitled to free software updates, 24-hour phone support through the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), and advance replaced hardware for repairs. Comprehensive Maintenance customers also receive on-site service. Customers who do not have a maintenance contract can purchase software updates and hardware repair services from Cisco to meet specific requirements rather than full service coverage. Cisco is committed to providing software support for a minimum of two (2) years and providing hardware support for a period of five (5) years after the EOS date. Appendix A has a complete list of various dates associated with the end-of-life (EOL) process.
Note:
Cisco 7000/7010 systems using RP/SP or RP/SSP or RP64MB processors are supported through all maintenance releases of Cisco IOS 11.2 per this platform's EOL program announced April 11, 1997. It is recommended to use Cisco IOS Release 11.1 or earlier for non-RP64MB systems per CSCdj18766 /en/US/ts/fn/misc/9.html .
Product Substitution
A family of ATM port adapters available with the VIP replaces the AIP-SM and AIP-E3.
Read Table 2 to upgrade existing Cisco 7000, 7010, and 7500 systems to enable use of VIP and PA-A1 or PA-A3 ATM adapters.
