End of Sale Notice Announcement:
All POSIP on Cisco 7500 Series PlatformsIntroduction
With the availability of the Packet-Over-SONET port adapter (POS PA) for Cisco 7200 and 7500 systems, the existing POS interface processors for Cisco 7500 systems will enter end-of-sales status (EOS) July 30, 2000.Specific Products Affected
Products that are affected by this notice include:
Rationale
The newer POS Port Adapter provides the same level of high switching performance and application of network services as the existing Packet over SONET/SDH interface processor (POSIP) in a single-wide port adapter design. This enables the use of the second port adapter bay, available in all VIP models for the Cisco 7500, thereby increasing configuration flexibility and density while lowering overall infrastructure costs. For example, the VIP4 can support configurations with two POS port adapters or one POS port adapter and any other single-wide port adapter such as serial, multi-channel, Ethernet, or Fast Ethernet. The VIP2 supports an aggregate 400 Mbps so the use of dual POS may not always be appropriate in VIP2-based configurations. The VIP4, supporting an aggregate of 800 Mbps, is often better suited for high-speed applications. In addition, the POS port adapter can support ATM Forum payload scrambling and CRC-32 error detection concurrently, which the POSIP cannot. The POS port adapter also extends the benefits of Packet over SONET/SDH connectivity to the Cisco 7200 simplifying the backbone architecture and spares logistics.
The POS port adapter is supported by the following Cisco products:
•
Cisco 7200 with an NPE-150, NPE-175, NPE-200, NPE-225, NPE-300 or NSE-1 processor
•
Cisco 7500 with a VIP2-50, VIP4-50, or VIP4-80
•
FlexWAN for Cisco Catalyst 6000 family of switches
•
Cisco IOSĀ® releases 11.1(21)CC, 12.0(3)T, 12.0(5)S, 12.1(1)E or 12.1(1)
Support
"End of Sale" refers to the time when specific products are no longer available for new purchases. Cisco will continue to support the POS interface processors through our SMARTnetTM and comprehensive maintenance programs. Customers with these service contracts are entitled to free software updates, 24-hour phone support through the Technical Assistance Center, and advance replaced hardware for repairs. Comprehensive maintenance customers also receive onsite service. Customers who do not have a maintenance contract can purchase software updates and hardware repair services from Cisco to meet specific requirements rather than full service coverage. Cisco is committed to providing software support for a minimum of two (2) years and providing hardware support for a period of five (5) years after the EOS date.Key Program Dates
* After July 30, 2005, no hardware repairs or exchanges will be available for the Packet over SONET interface processors listed in
this notice.Product Substitution
For Cisco 75xx series routers, all Packet over SONET interface processors are replaced with a versatile interface processor (VIP) and the Packet over SONET port adapters. Table 3 is a listing of interface processors and replacement VIP port adapters.
