Product Migration Options
Backround
Cisco is discontinuing feature development on the Cisco VPN 5000 Series for several reasons, including:
·To eliminate internal product overlap with other Cisco product families that are better suited to meet customer business objectives
·To speed new features to market
·To reallocate strategic engineering resources
Migration Strategy
Enterprise organizations are encouraged to move to the Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrator (Cisco VPN 5001 to Cisco VPN 3030, VPN 5002 to VPN 3060 or VPN 3080, and VPN 5008 to VPN 3080). For supporting very large numbers of site-to-site connections, enterprise customers using the Cisco VPN 5000 Series will be directed to the Cisco 7200 Series router.
Service provider customers will be directed to different Cisco products depending on the application. For managed customer premises equipment (CPE) solutions, use the Cisco VPN 3000 Series for VPN client termination or the Cisco 7200 Series for large numbers of site-to-site VPNs. For network-based VPN solutions, use the Cisco 7200 Series for a combination of remote access VPNs, site-to-site VPNs and integration of IP security (IPsec) with Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). For Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) network server (LNS) solutions, use the Cisco 7200, 7400, or 10000 Series routers.
For more information on either of the recommended migration technologies, please visit Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrator, Cisco 7200 Series Routers, or contact your Cisco account team.
Last Software Releases
The final Cisco VPN 5000 Series feature release for enterprise organizations will be v5.2.23. The final feature release for service providers will be v6.0.21. Both final software releases will be available in March 2002. The final Cisco VPN 5000 Client feature release will be v5.2, also available in March 2002. The final client release will include the following client platforms: Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000/XP, Mac OS 8 and 9, Mac OS X (3DES only), Linux (Kernel 2.2.x and 2.4.x only), SPARC Solaris 32/64 bit, and Intel Solaris.
Cisco will continue to offer patch and maintenance releases as necessary. No new feature enhancement requests for the final releases will be addressed.
Support of Hardware and Software
Cisco will provide maintenance support to customers who have existing service contracts with Cisco in accordance with the dates specified in Table 1 below. For milestone dates and definitions, refer to Tables 1 and 2.
Customers can use the Cisco Technology Migration Plan (TMP) to trade in products and receive credit toward the purchase of new Cisco equipment. For more information about Cisco TMP, go to: http://www.cisco.com/go/tradein/. The Cisco TMP application requires all users to have a Cisco.com user ID.
Customers may be able to continue to purchase the Cisco VPN 5000 Series Concentrators End of Sale Announcement through the Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment program. Refurbished units may be available in limited supply for sale in certain countries on a first-come, first-served basis until the Last Date of Support has been reached.
