Cisco® announces availability of Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.2(33)SXI1 for the Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series which introduces Virtual Switching System capabilities in Cisco IOS IP Base. Prior to 12.2(33)SXI1, customers who purchased the VS bundles had to upgrade to IP Services in order to enable the VSS 1440 mode. Given the tremendous success that Virtual Switching has experienced in the marketplace since its introduction in early 2008, Cisco will now offer this innovative technology pervasively on all IOS packages IP Base and above, supported with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Virtual Switching Supervisor Engine 720 with 10 GE uplinks.

Upgrade Paths

Customers running Release 12.2(33)SXH or 12.2(33)SXI in either Cisco IOS Software or Cisco IOS Software with Modularity can upgrade to Release 12.2(33)SXI1 of either Cisco IOS Software or Cisco IOS Software with Modularity.
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 VSS 1440 is supported only on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Virtual Switching Supervisor Engine 720 with 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks and not supported on Cisco Catalyst 6500/Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine 720, Cisco Catalyst 6500/Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine 720-3B, or Cisco Catalyst 6500/Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine 32.
Customers planning to upgrade or purchase a new software image license on a Supervisor Engine, should order the 6500-SW-SPARECD part number and configure the image of choice onto it.

Availability of Cisco Catalyst 6500 VSS 1440

The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Virtual Switching Supervisor Engine 720 with 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks and the minimum required software (Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(33)SXH1) for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 VSS 1440 are available today.

Ordering Information for Cisco Catalyst 6500 VSS 1440

There are two ways to order the Cisco Catalyst 6500 VSS 1440.
Option A: Order the supervisor engine using the following product IDs:

• VS-S720-10G-3C

• VS-S720-10G-3CXL

You can order these as standalone or configure them in a chassis. Note that these product IDs include Cisco IOS® Software IP Services image at no additional cost and support the VSS 1440 mode when configured with a single supervisor in each chassis.
Option B: Order the supervisor engine, as part of a bundle, using the following product IDs:

• VS-C6504E-S720-10G

• VS-C6506E-S720-10G

• VS-C6509E-S720-10G

• VS-C6509VE-S720-10G

• VS-C6513-S720-10G

Cisco has created these bundle options to support Layer 2 environments with VS-S720-10G-3C*. Note that these product IDs include Cisco IOS® Software IP Base image at no additional cost and support the VSS 1440 mode when configured with a single supervisor in each chassis**.
Furthermore, these bundles can be upgraded to support Cisco IOS® Software IP Services image or above with the purchase of a redundant supervisor. However, once a redundant supervisor is added, the system can only operate in a non-VSS mode.
