Cisco Systems® is announcing the availability of the new Cisco® WAE-512 and WAE-612 Wide Area Application Engines. These new products can ship installed with the latest Cisco Application and Content Networking System (ACNS) Software Version 5.4.3 or 5.5.1, the Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software Version 3.0.7, or Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) Software Version 4.0.1. A separate license is required for each software version, and the two cannot run concurrently.
The Cisco Wide Area Application Engine (WAE) product family offers a single, consolidated platform allowing users to run either Cisco ACNS or Cisco WAFS Software and also rely on a common hardware sparing model, simplifying operations and lowering overall cost. These new WAE models offer a superior solution for application acceleration for Web-based and applications servers, file servers, and streaming video.
Based on the same hardware architecture as the Cisco WAE-511 and WAE-611 appliances, the new Cisco WAE-512 and WAE-612 appliances come with enhanced hardware components, such as increased internal storage capacity and memory size, and increased performance.
The Cisco WAE-512 replaces the Cisco WAE-511 Wide Area Application Engine as the new low-end delivery platform for small to midsize branch offices, offering a wide capacity range from 80 to 500 GB of internal storage*. The Cisco WAE-511 can be configured as a content engine in a Cisco ACNS deployment. It cannot be configured as a content distribution manager (CDM) for Cisco ACNS. For an additional software license cost, it can be configured as a file engine or core engine in a Cisco WAFS deployment or as core or edge engine for Cisco WAAS (refer to Table 1). Also for an additional cost, it can be configured as a Cisco WAAS Central Manager.
The Cisco WAE-612 replaces the Cisco WAE-611 as a midrange edge delivery platform for regional offices or larger branch offices. The Cisco WAE-612 can be configured as a content engine, CDM, or content router in a Cisco ACNS deployment. For an additional software license cost, it can be configured as a file engine or core engine in a Cisco WAFS deployment or as a core and edge engine for Cisco WAAS (refer to Table 1). For an additional cost, it can be configured as a Cisco WAAS Central Manager.
NEW FEATURES
New features of the Cisco WAE-512 include the following:

• Provides internal storage capacity that is configurable up to 500 GB on two internal hard disk drives (HDDs)
• Runs Cisco ACNS, Cisco WAFS, or Cisco WAAS Software
New features of the Cisco WAE-612 include the following:
• Offers new 3.0-GHz Pentium D (dual-core) processor with 1-MB Layer 2 cache per core and 800-MHz FSB
• Starts with a default SDRAM of 2 GB with the option to upgrade to 4 GB with the addition of a two 1-GB SDRAM modules; memory speed increases to 533 MHz (PC2-4200)
• Runs Cisco ACNS, Cisco WAFS, or Cisco WAAS Software
Customers can place orders through their normal sales channels, starting mid May, 2006, for both the Cisco WAE-512 and Cisco WAE-612 Wide Area Application Engines.
CISCO WAE PRODUCT LINE COMPATIBILITY
Table 1 lists the Cisco software functions supported by the new WAEs. Note that the WAE products cannot be configured to perform all and ACNS functions simultaneously; they can perform one at a time (content engine, content router, or CDM). However, they can have both WAFS software and WAFS central manager functions running simultaneously.
