Cisco Systems® announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software Releases 2.5 and 3.0. The last day to order the Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software Releases 2.5 and 3.0 is June 15, 2007. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 of the EoL bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software Releases 2.5 and 3.0. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.
Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) Software Releases 2.5 and 3.0 are superseded by Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) Software 4.0. Cisco WAAS Software 4.0 offers enhanced functionality and an additional feature set over Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 and 3.0. In addition to enhancing the Wide Area File Services features, Cisco WAAS Software 4.0 adds a comprehensive set of Wide Area Application Acceleration features to optimize performance of TCP-based applications across the WAN. To accelerate application and file performance and to reduce WAN bandwidth usage, Cisco WAAS incorporates application acceleration and WAN optimization techniques, including compression, redundancy elimination, transport optimizations, caching, and content distribution. These techniques help overcome the bandwidth, throughput, and latency limitations associated with TCP/IP and application protocols.

Product Migration Options
Customers are encouraged to upgrade to the Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) Software 4.0. Information about this product can be found at: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6870/index.html. Upgrade information: Existing Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 and 3.0 customers who wish to upgrade to Cisco WAAS Software 4.0 are required to provide a dedicated WAE device for WAAS Central Manager functionality. The upgrade license product identification is WAFS-WAAS-MGR-UPG=. Cisco WAFS customers with current Cisco Software Application Support plus Upgrade (SASU) contracts can upgrade free of charge. Existing Cisco WAE devices running Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 or 3.0 can be upgraded to Cisco WAAS Software 4.0 with upgrade license WAAS-WAFS2ENT-APL=. Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 and 3.0 customers with current SASU contracts can upgrade to WAAS 4.0 Enterprise free of charge. WAE devices running both WAFS Core and WAFS Edge services will require a minimum of 2 GB of RAM to continue to run both services with Cisco WAAS Software 4.0. It is highly recommended that existing WAE devices running Cisco WAFS Software 3.0 with 512 MB of RAM are upgraded to have 1 GB of RAM before upgrading to Cisco WAAS Software 4.0. An in-place upgrade is supported only for devices running Cisco WAFS Software 3.0. Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 will require re-initialization using a Cisco WAAS Software 4.0 recovery CD. Cisco WAAS Software 2.5 50-user license SF-ASTOR-50-K9= is obsolete and discontinued,as user-based licensing is no longer used. Cisco WAFS Software 2.5 and 3.0 customers using NM-CE-BP-80G-K9 with SF-WAFS-3.0-NM-K9 should migrate to NME-WAE-502-K9 with SF-WAAS-4.0-NM-K9 and WAAS-ENT-NM.
