Cisco Unity Connection Cluster
Cisco Unity Connection Cluster
Revised November 16, 2010The Connection cluster feature provides high-availability voice messaging with two Connection servers that are configured in a cluster. In this configuration, also known as active-active high availability, a single node consists of two servers, and the number of ports depends on the server model (see Table 2). The total number of node ports is additive (meaning a single node can support up to 500 ports in the case of platform overlay 3), but the total number of users supported is applicable only to the primary server. The primary and secondary servers in a cluster must match in CPU and amount of memory, or the configuration is not supported.
If the hard disk space does not match on the two servers that you are using for a cluster, the smaller amount of disk space determines the storage capacity for each server in the cluster. This also applies if you are using one physical server and one virtual machine for the cluster.
See also the "Requirements for a Cisco Unity Connection 8.x Cluster" section in System Requirements for Cisco Unity Connection Release 8.x at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/requirements/8xcucsysreqs.html.
IMAP Idle Clients
The calculations for the total number of active clients assume the use of IMAP clients that support IMAP Idle. Cisco Unified Personal Communicator 7.0 and earlier, Cisco Unified Mobility Advantage, and Cisco Unified Mobile Communicator do not support IMAP Idle. As a result, each active instance of each of these clients (that does not support IMAP Idle) that is accessing Connection voice messages counts as four active clients.
Preloaded MCS 7835 Hardware Is Not Available With 8.6(1)
Added June 9, 2010Cisco Unity Connection 8.6(1) and later will not be available in a preloaded format on the MCS 7835 servers. Therefore, no MCS 7835-I3-K9-Uxxx servers will be available for this version of software. Only the MCS7825I5-K9-UCC3 and the MCS 7845-I3-K9-UCC3 SKU are available for the preloaded 7825-I5 and 7845-I3 servers.
Cisco Unity Connection 8.6(1) software can still run on the MCS 7835 I2 and I3 series servers, however, those servers will need the following:
•
6 GB of RAM
•
2 disks of minimum 146 GB drives
You will have the following options:
•
If upgrading from Connection 8.5 running on a MCS 7835 server, you will need to upgrade the memory on the server to 6GB before upgrading the software.
•
If you need a MCS 7835, you can buy the MCS 7835-I3-K9-UCC2 server, which comes preloaded with Cisco Unity Connection 8.5. Add 2 GB RAM to the server (MEM-7835-I3-2GB=), and upgrade the software to Cisco Unity Connection 8.6.
Configuring vCPU, vRAM, and vDisk for Cisco Unity Connection Virtual Machines
Revised May 17, 2010To simplify deployment of Connection on a virtual machine, Cisco provides OVA templates for the virtual platform overlays defined in Table 1.
CautionChanging the number of virtual CPUs, the amount of virtual RAM, or the number or size of virtual disks is not supported.
In addition, the OVA templates align the file system on the virtual disk(s) in the virtual machine at 64-KB blocks, which results in improved storage input/output operations per second (IOPS).
For information on downloading the latest OVA files, see the "Installation and Upgrade Information" section in the applicable Release Notes for Cisco Unity Connection at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6509/prod_release_notes_list.html.
For information on deploying an OVA file while installing a new Connection virtual server, see the "Overview of Mandatory Tasks for Installing a Cisco Unity Connection 8.x System" chapter of the Installation Guide for Cisco Unity Connection Release 8.x at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/installation/guide/8xcucigx.html.
For information on deploying an OVA file while migrating from a physical server to a virtual server, see the "Migrating from a Cisco Unity Connection Physical Server to a Connection 8.x Virtual Server" chapter of the Reconfiguration and Upgrade Guide for Cisco Unity Connection Release 8.x at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/upgrade/guide/8xcucrugx.html.
For information on deploying other Unified Communication applications on the same physical server with Connection, see the Unified Communications Virtualization wiki at http://docwiki-dev.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_Virtualization.

Replacing a Connection Server as You Upgrade to Connection 8.x
Added January 21, 2011If you are replacing the Connection server and the server is currently running Connection 7.1(2) or earlier, you will also need Connection 7.1(3) software:
•
Some older servers are not supported for use with Connection 8.x, and an attempt to install or upgrade to Connection 8.x on these older servers will fail. This means that you cannot upgrade to Connection 8.x on both the old server and the new server and use the Disaster Recovery System to move data to the new server.
•
Connection 7.1(2) and earlier does not include the drivers required by the new servers. This means you cannot install Connection 7.1(2) or earlier on a new server, move data to the new server by using the Disaster Recovery System, and then upgrade the new server to Connection 8.x.
For more information on replacing a Connection server as you upgrade to Connection 8.x, see the applicable chapter in the Reconfiguration and Upgrade Guide for Cisco Unity Connection Release 8.x at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/8x/upgrade/guide/8xcucrugx.html.
Memory and Hard Disk Requirements for Connection 8.x
Revised June 1, 2011You must add memory, or replace or remove hard disks for some MCS platforms in some configurations.
Platforms Qualified for Use with Cisco Unity Connection
Cisco Unity Connection 8.x is shipped from Cisco as an appliance on the Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers ending in the suffix "UCC1." However, Connection supports upgrades from some media convergence servers shipped for previous versions of Connection and Cisco Unity messaging. Table 11 through Table 26 outline the supported media convergence servers for Connection 8.x as well as hardware specifications, and, where applicable, required hardware changes for Connection 8.x to support the product. Where possible, Cisco product numbers are listed in the tables for hardware upgrades, as are original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) product part numbers for direct sourcing of the equipment.
Connection 8.x does not support first-generation MCS models (-I1 or -H1) or their software-only models.
