TelePresence Consultations Improve Care in Uganda

The Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, uses Cisco TelePresence to collaborate on care with the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI).

Doctors participating in missions to Uganda needed to provide medical and technical education to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals taking care of children and young adults with heart disease. They chose to use telepresence for training and consultations with the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Media Options

Challenge

  • Provide urgent pediatric care to children in developing countries
  • Connect medical teams internationally in real time
  • Increase access to education for surgical teams and nurses
  • Keep nurses onsite at the Uganda Heart Institute

Solution

  • Cisco TelePresence integrated immersive video to discuss medical cases

Results

  • Consulted on several types of pediatric heart disease
  • Conferred on individual cases
  • Enhanced medical education and training for doctors and nurses
  • Kept nurses at UHI involved in critical care, instead of sending them abroad for training

Immersive video is much smoother and much more seamless than talking on the phone. The ability for us to connect and share information is powerful.
